303. Sassafras

Sassafras albidum

Accession 968*A

Sassafras is found throughout eastern North America. The leaves of the sassafras tree are polymorphic—meaning they can take several shapes. They are either mitten-shaped, oval, or trident-shaped. In spring, the tree grows fragrant yellow flowers in clusters. In summer, the distinctive, variably shaped green leaves appear. These leaves turn red, orange, and yellow in the fall. In winter, the rough, deeply grooved bark takes center stage.
