305. Chinese Lilac

Chinese Lilac

Syringa × chinensis ‘Lilac Sunday’

Accession 164 - 96*A

This Chinese lilac’s scientific name is Syringa × chinensis ‘Lilac Sunday.’ As a cultivar—or cultivated variety—the plant has predictable characteristics, developed in a nursery or greenhouse, which distinguish it from other plants of the same species. It was given the epithet ‘Lilac Sunday’ in honor of the Arboretum’s annual celebration of the lilacs that line this area of Bussey Hill Road. This shrub is notable because it grows flowers further down its stems than other lilacs, creating dramatically arching branches of fragrant, pale purple blooms in spring.
