315. European Beech

European Beech

Fagus sylvatica ‘Tortuosa’

Accession 2420*A

This tree is one of the most photographed specimens at the Arboretum. Its twisted branches and smooth bark have long attracted photographers, and vandals, who have carved initials in the trunk throughout the years. In spring and summer, the tree’s pointed green leaves create a seemingly solid mass. These leaves glow golden in fall. In winter, the leaves drop, displaying the tree’s dramatic architecture.
